He Was in the Fire

Date: Jul 19, 2020

Speaker: Jaron Scott

Daniel 3

The Book of Daniel includes the stories of three Hebrew exiles who refuse to worship any false gods. Their faithfulness gets them thrown in the fire, but they're not alone. Before he was born, Jesus was with them. He was in the fire, protecting and perfecting those who put their faith in him.

He Is a Priest and King

Date: Jun 21, 2020

Speaker: Tim Chambers

Genesis 14:18-20

In Genesis 14, we're introduced to an important Old Testament figure, about whom we know very little. Melchizedek is described as the King of Salem and a priest of God Most High, and Abraham offers him one-tenth of his spoils after a great victory in battle. Then, in Psalm 110 and the Book of Hebrews, Melchizedek comes up again as someone whose life and work foreshadowed an even greater King/Priest. In this talk, Tim discusses what we know (and what we don't know) about Melchizedek and shows us how Jesus is like him, only better.

Nehemiah 6:1-16

Nehemiah had the important job of rebuilding the wall around the city of Jerusalem. He faced opposition on many fronts, but he finished his assignment. In this way, Nehemiah was a type of Jesus, a person whose story parallels aspects of Jesus' life and character. By comparing the two, Jaron shows us that Jesus had an even more important job than Nehemiah, and He successfully completed His work.

Isaiah 6

In about 740 BC the prophet Isaiah saw the Lord. He recorded what he saw and heard that day. When we look at various New Testament passages that either quote Isaiah or reference the things he saw, it becomes clear that he encountered the Son of God before his incarnation – Jesus before he was born. So in addition to what we can learn from Isaiah’s experience, there is a lesson to learn about the way the Word of God illuminates itself.
