Reading the Bible Together

Jesus said he didn’t live on food alone “but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matt. 4:4, Deut. 8:3) Not only was he talking about the Bible when he said that, he was quoting it. Reading the Bible feeds us and trains us to hear God’s voice. It feeds us individually, and when we all read in sync, our community is fed and built up in a unique way.

For several years now, Christ’s Church has been reading the Bible together. We’ve used a variety of plans and liked them all for different reasons. Starting with Advent 2023, we are following the daily reading plan from the Book of Common Prayer (1979). It’s built around the major seasons and celebrations of the church, and it stretches over two years.

Bible Gateway

The Bible Gateway website also features the Book of Common Prayer. You can follow along with each day’s reading on their website, and they also offer an email subscription that will deliver each day’s reading to your inbox. Find the plan and the subscription here.

Paper/PDF

We printed out a paper version of this plan for those who prefer that option. Copies are available on Sundays near the entryway. You can also tap the button below to view or download a PDF version.

YouVersion ApP (Recommended)

One of the reasons we chose this Bible reading plan is that it’s available on the YouVersion Bible app, which you can access from a desktop or mobile device. To read along from your computer, click here. To read along on your mobile device, watch the video or follow the instructions below! Please be sure to set the start date for your plan to December 3.

To read along through the YouVersion Bible app, follow these steps:

  1. If you don’t already have the YouVersion Bible app, download it here.

  2. Open the app and tap the Plans tab at the bottom of your screen.

  3. Type “Book of Common Prayer” in the search bar and tap Go.

  4. Tap “Start Plan” and then select “Invite Friends.” This will give you the option of selecting a start date for your plan. You will want to choose December 3.

  5. You then have the option of inviting friends to read along with you. Some small groups, families, and friends are reading together and others are reading on their own. That part is up to you! You can share this plan with others or click “Invite friends later” if you’re not sure or you’d rather read by yourself.

  6. You also have the option of receiving daily reminders to read on your mobile device. To set those up, tap the More button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, then scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Settings. From there, choose Notification Settings, then Push Notifications. Select your plan and scroll to the bottom of the screen to turn Reminders on. You can also choose a specific time when the remidner will be sent to your phone.
